Airbnb to Ban Indoor Security Cameras in Rental Properties to Enhance Guest Privacy

In response to concerns about guest privacy and hidden cameras in rental properties, Airbnb has announced a significant policy change to prohibit indoor security cameras in rental properties listed on its platform. On April 30, Airbnb plans to implement a new measure to ban indoor security cameras in rental properties listed on its platform.

Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, emphasised the collaborative nature of the policy changes, stating, “These changes were made in consultation with our guests, hosts, and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community.” This approach underscores Airbnb’s commitment to its users and the importance of their input.

The updated policy explicitly bans indoor security cameras, addressing a subset of listings on the platform where such devices may have been a concern. While Airbnb previously allowed hosts to install indoor security cameras in areas like hallways and living rooms, strict conditions were in place. Cameras had to be visible, advertised in property listings, and prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms.

The company’s move comes after complaints about hidden cameras in rental properties, prompting Airbnb to reevaluate and strengthen its privacy measures. Last year, a honeymooning Chinese couple went viral on Xiaohongshu after discovering a hidden camera in their Airbnb in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

Under the revised policy, hosts will still be permitted to use doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors, but with specific limitations. These devices cannot be directed into indoor spaces, and outdoor areas, such as showers or saunas, are off-limits for monitoring.

Additionally, hosts are required to disclose the presence of noise monitors and outdoor cameras before guests confirm their bookings. This clear delineation of the use of these devices helps hosts understand and adhere to the new guidelines.

Airbnb reiterates its commitment to balancing hosts’ ability to monitor the safety of their listings with the imperative to safeguard guest privacy. The company affirms that the majority of its rental properties do not currently have security cameras, and the new policy aims to reinforce the trust and confidence of its global community.
