After years of pandemic-induced changes, the world’s cities have finally settled into a new normal, according to the latest liveability data. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual Global Liveability Index evaluates 173 cities across stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. This year, the average liveability score barely increased, rising just 0.06 points compared to more significant fluctuations in previous years. Despite the minimal change in scores, the top 10 cities remain remarkably similar to last year’s list, with minor shifts in ranking.
1. Vienna, Austria: For the third consecutive year, Vienna has claimed the title of the world’s most liveable city. The Austrian capital achieved perfect scores in stability, healthcare, education, and infrastructure, with a slightly lower score in culture and environment due to a lack of major sporting events this year. Residents appreciate Vienna’s fresh spring water, available directly from the tap, and its variety of recreational activities, such as windsurfing on the New Danube and attending performances at the Vienna State Opera, where tickets cost as little as €13.
Nikolaus Graeser, spokesperson for the Vienna Tourism Board, highlights the city’s efficient public transport network, available for just €1 a day, and its well-functioning healthcare system. Vienna is also dedicated to sustainability, creating new “Grätzeloasen” (small green oases) throughout the city, where residents can grow vegetables or plant flowers.
2. Copenhagen, Denmark Copenhagen continues to rank highly, known for its strong social support systems, excellent healthcare, and commitment to sustainability. The city’s bike-friendly infrastructure and focus on renewable energy contribute to its high liveability score.
3. Zurich, Switzerland Zurich, up three spots from last year, excels in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and culture. Residents appreciate the city’s cleanliness, efficient public transport, and proximity to nature. Alexandra Humbel, CMO of People Like Us Home Exchange, enjoys the safety and community obligations that contribute to Zurich’s orderly environment. Ruslan Maidans, founder of NOWATA soap, praises the city’s smart traffic control system and sustainability initiatives.
4. Melbourne, Australia Melbourne, despite slipping one spot due to rising housing costs, remains a favourite for its cultural diversity, culinary scene, and high quality of life. Gus Gluck, business development and beverage manager of Neighbourhood Wine Group, highlights Melbourne’s vibrant cultural sector and iconic pubs. Families appreciate the city’s affordable childcare, safe streets, and excellent playgrounds.
5. Calgary, Canada Calgary, tied with Geneva for fifth place, boasts perfect scores in stability, healthcare, and education. Samantha Odo, a longtime resident, loves the city’s natural beauty, such as the Rocky Mountains and the Bow River. Phil Ollenberg, who moved to Calgary nine years ago, enjoys the city’s thriving arts and culture scene, including the world-famous Calgary Stampede.
7. Sydney, Australia & Vancouver, Canada Both cities offer a high quality of life with their beautiful natural surroundings, excellent public services, and vibrant cultural scenes. Sydney’s housing costs have impacted its ranking, but its residents still enjoy the city’s coastal lifestyle and cultural amenities.
9. Osaka, Japan & Auckland, New Zealand Osaka’s ease of living and excellent culinary scene have earned it perfect scores in stability, healthcare, and education. Kay A., owner of Tiny Tot In Tokyo, I find Osaka less overwhelming than Tokyo, with plentiful trains and great shopping. Auckland maintains its status with its beautiful landscapes and strong community spirit.
The Global Liveability Index 2024 highlights cities that offer a high quality of life through stability, healthcare, education, culture, and infrastructure. While the rankings have seen minimal changes, the top cities continue to provide their residents with excellent living conditions and a variety of amenities. As the world adapts to a post-pandemic reality, these cities exemplify resilience and commitment to improving the lives of their inhabitants.
