Thailand’s New Cannabis Regulations: What Tourists Need to Know

Thailand’s cannabis laws are undergoing significant changes, impacting both locals and tourists alike. Here’s what visitors to the country need to know about using weed under the proposed regulations:

Proposed Crackdown: Less than two years after legalising cannabis, Thailand’s conservative coalition government is seeking stricter regulations, aiming to restrict marijuana use primarily to medicinal purposes.

Calls for Reclassification: Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has urged the Ministry of Public Health to reclassify cannabis as a narcotic, emphasising its use for medical and health purposes only.

Moving Markets

Changing Political Landscape: The new government, led by the Pheu Thai Party, is behind the push for tighter regulations on cannabis. This comes in contrast to the previous administration, which oversaw the drug’s legalisation.

Health Concerns: Concerns have been raised about the impact of widespread cannabis use, including substance abuse among young people and an increase in psychological issues related to its consumption.

Legal Penalties: While the proposed regulations await approval, recreational use of marijuana could result in fines of up to 60,000 Thai baht (€1,560) and prison sentences of up to one year. Advertising or marketing cannabis for recreational use could also lead to fines.

Tourist Restrictions: Smoking or vaping cannabis in public places is prohibited, with potential fines for causing a public nuisance. Tourists are advised to adhere to local laws and avoid transporting cannabis across borders, as it remains illegal in neighbouring countries.

As Thailand navigates these regulatory changes, tourists should stay informed about evolving laws and exercise caution when using cannabis during their visit.
